River Brew Review: Black Butte Porter

Bull Trout and Black Butte Porter = Great Combination

Location: Metolious River, Oregon
Beer: Deschutes Brewery Black Butte Porter

Black Butte and the Black Butte

Mike and I decided to head out the Metolious River this past weekend and figured that it was time to drink Black Butte Porter while fishing at the base of the Black Butte.  We had a great weekend of fishing and an even better time drinking Black Butte Porter.

We started the weekend by reading a weather report that called for 70% chance of showers and cold temperatures.  We decided it didn’t matter, we would brave the rain and cold to hopefully fish alone on the Metolious which doesn’t happen very often.  When we arrived we found partially cloudy skies and no rain in sight.  The weekend treated us well with 17 Bull Trout landed and lots of Black Butte Porter consumed.  The biggest Bully was 31 inches and the average was 24 inches. So yeah, it was a good weekend.

Sea Lion Takes Fish and Pulls Angler Overboard

Sea Lion Pulls Angler Overboard

I bet that you have been afraid of losing a fish before but never like this.  An Oregon man fishing the Willamette River, Friday May 6th, netted a Chinook Salmon but before he could get the net into the boat he was pulled overboard by a Sea Lion.  He was able to quickly grab the gunwale to keep himself close to the boat and from being completely submerged in the frigid water.  He initial held onto the net but quickly lost the battle with the Sea Lion.  In total he lost the fish, a $150 net, and a $500 fishing setup.  So the next time you are upset a fish got away, just remember, it could have been worse!

How Craft Brewers Are Getting More Consumers

Redhook

In order to get more people interested and hooked on “Craft Beer” Craft Brewers are now making beers with lower Abv%.  The idea is that if Craft Breweries make a more sessionable beer they can introduce it to consumers who are not used to the traditionally strong craft beers.  In 2010 craft beer dollars were up 12% while the industry was down about 1%.

Is this a good thing or bad thing?  I personally think that having a more sessionable craft beer would be great.  I enjoy craft beers but when I am in the mood to drink a few more than normal, say out on the golf course or at a barbecue, I don’t want to be knocked on my butt by two beers.  It might be nice to have a delicious craft beer that is of moderate Abv%.

We would love to hear your thoughts about this.  More info about this can be found here.

Some Bull Trout Pictures From the Weekend

Mike and I had a great weekend fishing trip.  We caught 17 Bull Trout, the largest 31 inches.  Here are some pictures.

30 Inch Bull Trout

31 Inch Bull Trout

Notice Mike’s awesome facial hair, the fish reacted very positive to it and therefore he has to keep this until we have a bad day of fishing!

Need to Chill Some Beer in a Hurry

Need to Chill Beer in a Hurry

Say it is a hot day, you forgot beers out on the river and you want a cold brew bad when you get home.  Too bad, you never put the beer in the fridge.  Here is a nice easy and quick recipe for cold beers fast.

Grab a cooler or large container that can hold ice and water.  Put one bag ice and about 3 liters of water into cooler/container.  Add 2+ cups salt.  Mix ice, water, and salt.  Insert beers into cooler/container.  Wait 4-8 minutes and you have ice cold brews.  Simple, easy, and effective!

A Little Humor on a Monday

We thought you might need a little laughter on your Monday, so here is a Miller Lite beer commercial circa 1990. It has beer and fishing in it, can’t ask for more than that and it made us smile. Enjoy!
